Casterton is a school for individuals. Our aim is to create a warm and friendly environment in which the best is brought out of each girl. Opportunities are provided for all girls to develop their own personalities and talents and so acquire the confidence to succeed in the modern world. We aim to provide, for both boarders and day girls, an extension of family life and to create a stimulating environment in which individuals grow happily from childhood to young adulthood. We encourage care of and consideration for others at all times.
We have a strong House system and every girl is a member of one of the Houses in it. Each girl’s Housemistress is responsible for her overall care and takes a special responsibility for her pastoral care. The Heads of Year oversee academic matters and liaise with the Housestaff over these and pastoral matters. In addition each girl in Years 7 – 10 has a Form Tutor and girls in Year 11 – Sixth Form have a Director of Studies. They, too, liaise with the Housestaff to ensure that all girls have the best care possible.
Inter-House Competitions in Sport, Music, Drama, Public Speaking and Debating are keenly fought and the support of parents and friends is always greatly appreciated!
The welfare of the girls is very important to us. All the girls receive professional care and support from the Medical Centre Staff, which includes a qualified and experienced professional counsellor, and all boarders are registered with the School Doctor. Our School Chaplain is always available to help the girls if the need arises. It has been said that an army marches on its stomach! Our Catering Department ensures that we all always have our best foot forward by consistently producing high quality, healthy and appetising food in the newly designed dining room which opened in September 2008. Fresh fruit and vegetables, hot and cold dishes and tempting deserts are always available. Visiting sports teams often joke that they come to us, not just for the competition, but also for the after-match meals!
Whilst we pride ourselves on having a happy and caring school there can be no guarantee that all of the girls will be happy all of the time. However, such is the backup from all members of staff and other girls, no girl need ever feel that she is on her own and that she cannot find the solution to any problem. New girls, whatever their age, are made welcome, with staff and girls experienced in the ways of boarding school life smoothing the way. Parents, who often find dealing with the new boarding experience harder than their daughters do. They will have frequent contact with their daughter’s Housemistress, particularly during the settling in period.
