Why Choose Casterton for Sixth Form Studies?
What is distinctive and good about our Sixth Form?
Casterton School's Sixth Form has an impressive tradition with consistently excellent results.
- It is a small Sixth Form with a friendly atmosphere and an international feel.
- New girls are welcomed and integrate immediately with the help of an organised induction.
- Girls are taught by experienced staff with proven track records and being well qualified means they gain entry into their university of choice.
- The subject choice is broad and includes all the ‘facilitating subjects’ identified by the country’s top universities as preferred options. Class sizes are small which enables the staff to tune into pupils’ needs and respond in an appropriate way to support or provide extension tasks.
- Girls are given individual support with their UCAS applications and have dedicated careers lessons throughout the Sixth Form. Progress is monitored every month and issues followed up promptly as we pride ourselves on maximising the potential of every girl.
- Every girl is allocated to a Director, a member of staff who they meet with weekly to discuss academic and personal matters.
- Opportunities for enrichment are vast and unique. In the L6 the girls undertake cookery lessons to prepare for independent living, ICT lessons to learn how to make and deliver presentations and in ‘Issue of the week’ they debate topical current issues. In the U6 girls follow a university preparation course which covers money management, applying for financial support and accommodation at university.
- A recent addition to our curriculum is the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which provides the girls with an opportunity for independent learning. The girls choose a topic which interests them and research it with the help of a supervisor. The universities are impressed by it as it equips girls with essential skills for university study.
- Girls can take on positions of responsibility immediately, such as being a House Captain in charge of organising younger pupils for inter house competitions in L6 and being a prefect in the U6. The Sixth Form are rewarded for academic or non academic achievements with Praise Slips and these are allied to the new skills award.
- We recognise that good academic results are part of the package and hence we are committed to the holistic approach to education. Boarders do their own washing and plan and budget for one main meal at the weekend. The Sixth Form has a dedicated social event each term planned by them such as the Ball, Directors' dinner and a meal out at a local restaurant. There are socials with local boys’ schools throughout the year.
