Public Speaking & Debating

The Debating Society meets every Thursday after school.  Membership is open to girls in Years 11 to 13.

We follow the English Speaking Union model for debating that involves one team of two members proposing a given motion and another team of two members opposing that motion.

Involvement in debating is a sure way of students increasing their speaking and listening skills and general knowledge in conjunction with their self-confidence.  They have to create coherent arguments and be able to articulate them with clarity, making use of a range of rhetorical devices that will win over their audience.  When students oppose a motion, they have to be ready to find flaws in the proposition's argument in a matter of minutes so participants are challenged to become quick thinkers!

Whether a motion be based on politics, ethics, literature or popular culture, members can expect to be stimulated intellectually and entertained.
