Languages

Languages are both successful and popular at Casterton.

French is offered from Year 7 in the senior school with taster lessons in German and Spanish in Year 8. All girls study Latin in Year 8 and 9 to give them a real appreciation of language and its roots.

We follow the AQA GGSE in French, German and Spanish and OCR for Latin with excellent results in all languages. AS and A2 are offered in French, German and Spanish. The girls consistently perform well and a high proportion go on to University. We are fortunate to have the support of native Language Assistants who add detailed and up to date knowledge of the country as well as providing individual oral practice.

We support individual learning by encouraging research and personal projects.

The Languages department is vibrant and creative. We have interactive white boards to promote interactive learning and the use of up to date technology.

Our new Language Lab enables students to develop oral proficiency in the foreign language and teachers to create stimulating new class activities.

We bring the real world into the classroom!

We extend learning opportunities beyond the classroom through films, food, theatre trips, language day visits to universities, languages week, quizzes, cross curricular activities and trips to Spain, France and Germany.

Some of our Lower Sixth French pupils went to Nice, France to research their cultural topic on the painters Matisse and Chagall. Year 9 German took part in an exchange with the Marienschule girls’ school in Fulda, Germany in March and June 2011.  We are hoping to run a Spanish trip this coming academic year.
