History

History teaching at Casterton aims to ensure that pupils develop an interest in, and long lasting curiosity about, people and societies from the past. It aims to engender in pupils an attitude of tolerance and respect with regard to other cultures. Whilst gaining an understanding of key historical concepts such as change and continuity and causation, it is hoped that pupils will appreciate how the present, including politics, culture and social mores, has been shaped by the past.

Essential study skills such as the ability to take notes, locate and extract information from primary and secondary sources are also taught and reinforced with all year groups.

Trips

The History Department organises the following trips:

Learning from the experts

The department regularly invites historians into School to share their perspective on particular aspects of the past. Historical lectures, plays and conferences are also attended.

Abbeyfield Project

History students can participate in an inter-generational project we run with a residential home each year. Students discuss war-related and social history issues with the elderly residents to give them a different historical perspective on the 20th Century. Although this is not directly relevant to the A Level course, it gives the students a wider view of history and an extra dimension to university applications.
