Operation Wallacea Expedition to South Africa 2012

Dates
The expedition dates in South Africa are from 14th-27th July 2012

Operation Wallacea run biological and conservation research in 10 countries worldwide University and sixth form students can join these projects as volunteers

10 x Y11/12 students have selected South Africa as their chosen location
They are not all Biologists but all of them have a spirit of adventure and want to do something challenging and different.

Expedition programme/activities
The expedition provides a unique opportunity to be involved in real scientific research in two remote environments. First week is spent in the Kruger or Kwa Zulu Natal sites involving bush training collecting data on mammals and birds plus opportunity to see lions, rhino and elephants. Second week spent dive training and reef ecology in the Indian Ocean.

Certificate of personal effectiveness
The preparation for and completion of the expedition will require the development of many skills. Participants can keep a portfolio of their progress and use this to apply for a certificate of personal effectiveness (CoPE). Successful completion of this is worth 70 UCAS points. The skills include problem solving, working with others, discussion, research and an oral presentation.
Fund raising has already started, the girls have organised themselves into a committee and already have many ideas for activities.
