English

The English Department at Casterton aims to foster a love of language and literature in the students, encouraging them to become avid readers whilst equipping them with the necessary imaginative, expressive and analytical skills for a successful future.

How do we do this?

By inspiring our students with our passion for the subject and making use of the best teaching strategies whether they be traditional or modern!

"At the moment I am enjoying teaching my favourite novel to Year 10: Wuthering Heights. I am always engaged by the dialectical nature of the work as it explores and questions the power of nature as opposed to the lure of culture. The work’s narrative complexity is of particular interest to me as it ties in with the research I conducted as a postgraduate in dialogism. I have been delighted by the students’ ability to engage with alternate critical interpretations at a relatively young age."

Mr. D. Rose

"I am intrigued by words and their meanings and the ways in which writers play with language in literature, as well as in the many spoken forms of communication which exist in English culture. This naturally leads me to Shakespeare, with his invention of words and phrases still in use and to a fascination for story-telling through drama. I work with words, but occasionally find the time to write poetry!"

Miss M. Scott

"In L6, I love teaching Christina Rossetti’s poetry: the voice for all voiceless women in Victorian England!  Poetry that is full of passion from a woman who never married.  Intriguing.  American Literature is also a true personal favourite. Every time I re-read ‘The Great Gatsby’ I am struck by something new;  unforgettable characters, mesmerising language, and a multi faceted reflection of post First World War American society."

Mrs. F. Norman

"When teaching Year 7, the aspects I most enjoy are meeting the children, finding their emerging strengths and interests, establishing any gaps that can be filled in their basic learning and hopefully opening up a whole world of language and literature that will inspire them for the rest of their lives.  The challenge as to how to approach the learning and access these young minds is the most rewarding aspect for me."
