Economics & Business Studies
The department offers ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level Economics and ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level Business Studies in the Sixth Form.
Studying these courses provides students with a valuable and useful basis for entering any occupation in both the private and public sector.
The largest class size taught in both subjects in the last five years is 9 girls. The individual attention each student receives helps to generate excellent results with a high proportion of girls achieving the top two grades in Economics. The department teaches a wide range of abilities and in Business Studies, girls regularly gain results above their predicted grades. Adding value is a significant target and is achieved year upon year.
Girls studying Economics take part in the prestigious Bank of England Target 2.0 competition which is sponsored by The Times newspaper. In 2010-11, Casterton School were Regional runners-up.
The department enters girls into The Student Investor competition, run by IFS. This is the premier UK online investment game for students aged 14 - 19. Teams have to buy and sell shares to make the highest possible capital gains within six months. The girls learn how to research companies, take informed risks and experience first hand the excitement and potential financial returns to be gained from playing the stock market.
