Careers Guidance

Casterton views Careers Education as an extremely important part of the curriculum, bearing in mind the highly competitive nature of Higher Education and employment. We aim to help students make realistic and informed decisions about their futures and we equip them with the tools they need to help them make successful transitions from one stage of their education, training and work to the next.

Students are prepared for their GCSE choices through discussions with the Head of Careers, their Head of Year and outside speakers. They are encouraged to keep a wide variety of options open to them by choosing at least one language, one humanity, one science and an art based subject. They are helped in their decisions by two dedicated Careers computer programmes, ‘Probe’ and ‘JED’.

Year 11 students are prepared for their A-Level options through discussions with the Head of Careers and their Head of Year. They also complete two computer tests (‘Preview’ and ‘Profile’) aimed at matching their abilities and interests with suitable subjects. This is followed up by an interview with an impartial Careers advisor from COA and a further interview with their academic Director.

Sixth Form Careers lessons, in conjunction with the Sixth Form Enrichment programme, focus on a wide range of topics such as self awareness, preparation for university, life skills, financial education, gap years, employment options, making transitions and university application. Guest speakers are invited in to talk to the students (e.g. N.H.S., Gap Year organisations, Year in Industry) and several visits are arranged, such as to Oxbridge Conferences and Higher Education Fairs.

All students are encouraged to research their career choices and options by using the books available in the Careers library as well as the vast array of useful websites. They can also discuss issues with their academic directors, form tutors, Heads of Year and Head of Careers.
